Practical Help with Bible Study My Highlighting System The way to know God is through the study of His word. I have found great pleasure in studying the Bible every day. Since I was fourteen I have endeavored to read a few chapters in the Bible every day. It has kept my heart alive in a culture constantly pulling me to the inferior pleasures it has to offer. Two years ago I sat with my new study Bible in hand and decided that I needed some sort of system for the madness my highlighting and underlining had become. In my previous Bible I would just highlight any verse that I liked; however, this created a very messy and confusing time of trying to find verse later. I decided to create a system with the values and essentials that are important to me in my relationship with Jesus.
Highlighting System
God’s Love (L), Bridegroom, Bridal Paradigm (B), The Emotions of God for Human Beings, the Love Between the Godhead (G)
Worship, Wisdom (W), Prayers, Intercession, the Glory of God (His Passion for His Fame) (G)
Steps to Salvation, Directional, Commandments
Healing (H), Power (P), Kingdom (K), Missions (M), Harvest (H), Nazirite (N)
Prophesy (P), End Times Significance (E.T.S), Knowledge of God (K), Judgment (J)
Miscellaneous
This has done several things for me. First, whenever I am looking for a verse I just think through what category it would have been in and look for that color. Second, since I am on staff at the International House of Prayer, it has really helped me as I sing and pray. All I have to do is turn to Isaiah, for instance, if we are praying for healing for someone and look for something that is orange and underlined with H beside it. I always have Biblical language write at my fingertips. Third, if I am counseling someone or preaching it is easy to look up scriptures pertaining to a particular topic. The awesome thing about it is it is my history in God. This is the way I saw the verse when I read it. It is a good quick way to keep a record of your quite times with the Lord. For those who are wondering, I use Liquid Accent Highlighters. I usually purchase them at Wal-Mart, but you can get them anywhere. They seem to work the best and they are the colors I use in this system. I have the New Inductive Study Bible, NASB. I like the typesetting and the spaces for your own titles. This is how one of my more populous pages in Isaiah 26 turned out; I think it almost has everything in it! |
